This Newsbrief deals with a new format for a graphic user interface. More particularly it focuses on a novel principle and a novel process, a touchscreen that is projected onto a work surface. In terms of the Atlas of Technological Megatrends it is concerned with the functionality of information transmission.
The continuous development of info-tech devices has led to the merger of keyboards and screens, and to the emergence of touchscreens.
With further miniaturization and mobility the challenge of a suitable formatted touchscreen has become a major concern. A recent advance in this connection has been the development of a projected touch screen. This screen does not have an autonomous material structure but is projected on to a work surface by means of a portable projector. Many worksurfaces can be used. These include walls, tabletops, clothing and bare skin.
The touchscreen is operated by human fingers. The position of a finger is traced by means of a miniature camera with software that can recognize a finger shape and can discern the action of a tap or click. The invention, called OmniTouch, is ascribed to Chris Harrison, a graduate at Carnegie Mellon. The actual work was done at Microsoft Research in Redmond.
In terms of the NASA nine point scale of technological readiness levels (TRL) this technology has just passed TRL3. Technology explorers should consider the technology as a landmark technology and include it in their watchlists. Further rapid improvement can be expected. In particular the camera and projector will be miniaturized to a cell-phone scale.
