Private space-flights
Positioning this technology in the
Functionality Grid
Reformatted from: Van Wyk, Rias J: Technology - A Unifying Code, 2004, SMG, Cape Town, p.34. Based on: Ropohl, Gunter: Eine Systemtheorie der Technik, 1979, Carl Hanser Verlag, Munich and Vienna, p.178.
This Newsbrief focuses on private space flights. More particularly it deals with offerings by private enterprise to provide a commercial cargo carrying service. In terms of the Atlas of Technological Megatrends the Newsbrief is concerned with the functionality of matter transportation.
Commercial cargo space flights are receiving increasing attention:
  • The NASA shuttle program winds down in 2010
  • Next generation NASA spacecraft is due in 2015
  • Bridging transportation is needed for the International Space Station (ISS)
Most of the attention for bridging transportation needs have centered on offerings by Russia. However private flight capabilities are being developed in the USA to provide a commercial alternative.
In 2006, Space Exploration Technologies Corporation (SpaceX) announced that it had been selected by NASA to demonstrate delivery and return of cargo to the ISS. NASA can extend the agreement to include transport of crew. If this demonstration succeeds, NASA could use SpaceX?s capability to resupply
On September 28, 2008 SpaceX successfully launched Flight 4 of Falcon 1, from the Kwajalein Atoll. Falcon 1 is the world's first privately developed liquid fuel rocket to reach orbit. According to Elon Musk, President of SpaceX: "The data shows we achieved a super precise orbit insertion - middle of the bullseye - and then went on to coast and frestart the second stage, which was icing on the cake?. (
This achievement opens a new chapter in the space industry in the USA. We expect to see more economical launch vehicle design, and more access to space-based opportunities such as surveillance and specialized manufacture.
